The metaphor of a delayed flight hits hard. Covid has literally delayed me getting on flights. As someone living outside their passport country by choice, pre-Covid, I took multiple international flights a year to many places to visit friends and family, attend conferences, and during holidays. I was unable to use flights I had booked for summer 2020. But I also haven’t left China since February 2020 and at this point I don’t foresee leaving until June 2023. (And that is mostly likely going to be a move back to Canada to regroup rather than to a new country.) It’s a weird feeling to be in a country devoted to Covid zero while much of the outside world (both individuals and nations) seems to be pretending the pandemic is over and everything can go back to “normal”.
